The president of the State University of New York at Oneonta, which reported having the worst coronavirus outbreak of any public university in the state, has resigned from her position.
The school announced on Thursday that Barbara Jean Morris has resigned and will be replaced by former SUNY Purchase interim President Dennis Craig. On the same day, the school reported over 700 positive coronavirus cases among students since the start of the fall semester.
“Dr. Barbara Jean Morris has transitioned from her position as president to pursue other opportunities,” the university said in a statement. “A search for a permanent president is expected to begin soon.”
SUNY Oneonta transitioned to an online-only format in September after almost 400 students tested positive for COVID-19, and a virus control crew was sent by the state to the school to keep the outbreak from spreading to the rest of the city.
SUNY Purchase, by contrast, has only reported three positive cases since resuming classes at the end of August.
Craig said in a statement: “Success will require an effective partnership with our students and families, and I am committed to listening to them, as well as working closely with campus and local governance and all stakeholders in the weeks ahead.”
