A city councilman from a town in the Hudson Valley has issued a travel advisory for New York City after the city’s police department released data showing a spike in crime last month, Fox News reports.
“Due to the rising rate of violence and major crimes, it is recommended that area residents exercise increased caution while visiting New York City,” wrote East Fishkill councilman Anil Beephan, Jr. in his advisory, which was posted to Facebook on Wednesday.
“Violent crime - such as homicide, shootings, felony assault, grand larceny, and robberies - is (sic) widespread,” Beephan continued. “Armed criminals have been known to target and attack individuals, both pre-meditated and at random.”
Data from the New York Police Department released earlier this month showed a 130% increase in “shooting incidents across the city” in June when compared to the same month last year, along with a 118% increase in burglaries and a 51% increase in car thefts.
"I just thought it would be important for residents in my town to know that there is an uptick in crime and they should be careful when they go down there,” Beephan told News 12 in Westchester. “Keep their wits about them, try not to go into the city and travel down dark areas by yourself.”
