US Muslims Find Defending Themselves Exhausting

Saturday, 12 March 2011 12:59 PM EST

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — U.S. Muslims say a congressional hearing on Islamic radicalization in America demonizes all followers of the faith because of the actions of a few.

Muslims in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn — home to one of the nation's largest Middle Eastern enclaves — say Thursday's hearing called by Republican Rep. Peter King ignores Muslims' efforts to help fight terrorism since the Sept. 11 attacks.

King contends Muslims haven't done enough to keep young men from becoming radicals bent on terrorism. Others defended Muslims who serve their communities, including a firefighter who died in the 2001 attacks.

Dewnya Bakri-Bazzi of Dearborn fears the hearing will spark backlash against Muslims just going about their lives. The law school student says defending her loyalty to Islam and America can be downright exhausting.
