It's been only six months since the end of the "don't ask, don't tell" rule that prohibited gays and lesbians from serving openly in the armed forces. But at military academies, it's already a different world.
The nation's oldest private military academy is holding gay pride events this week. The programs at Vermont's Norwich University include programs with titles like "condom Olympics" and "queer prom."
The student leader who helped organize the events is 22-year-old Joshua Fontanez of Browns Mills, N.J. He says he always wanted to be a soldier but figured he'd have to keep his sexuality a secret.
A similar group has formed at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., and one is in the works at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
