Three workers at facilities housing migrant kids in U.S. custody have tested positive for coronavirus, according to CBS News.
The staffers worked at two different facilities in New York that house migrant children in the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement. Also, one foster parent helping care for migrant children in Washington state has tested positive.
ORR is coordinating with local public health authorities on "appropriate quarantine measures."
The virus, which originated in Wuhan, China, has infected more than 372,000 people worldwide and killed more than 16,000, per Johns Hopkins University. In the U.S., 42,400 people have been infected and 579 people have died.
The report comes as U.S. authorities face growing calls to shut all of the nation's immigration courts and to release detained immigrants who do not pose a threat to public safety. Immigration and Customs Enforcement last week reported that one of its workers has the virus.
"A coronavirus outbreak at immigration detention facilities is imminent if it's not already happening," said Silky Shah with the Detention Watch Network.
Dr. Ranit Mishori, a professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine and medical adviser to the group Physicians for Human Rights, told NPR that detainees were "just stuck there like sitting ducks.
"The window of opportunity is rapidly, rapidly closing, because I think we need to let them out before they become sick," she said.
