Reagan on Shooting: Society Has 'Absolutely Imploded'

Michael Reagan says a dramatically different America where people have stopped caring about each other is to blame for the Valentine's Day massacre at a Florida high school.

"Society has absolutely imploded – society has changed," Reagan, a veteran political commentator and the oldest son of President Ronald Reagan, told host Miranda Khan on Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live."

"Guns have been here from the beginning of time, so what's changed is we have changed . . . And we have to find out what it is that will bring us back to . . . caring about people and what have you."

Authorities said a 19-year-old gunman wielding a AR-15 stormed into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and shot dead 17 students and staffers Wednesday. Nikolas Cruz, who had earlier been expelled from Douglas, had so frightened teachers he had been banned from carrying a backpack to class.

It is a far cry, Reagan said, from when he was growing up as a young man in California, the son of famous movie star and future California governor and U.S. president.

"When I went to school back in the 1950s, they had a rifle club, the school provided us rifles and bullets," Reagan recalled. "They went hunting in the afternoon, after school. They took their shotguns to school.

"My father bought me a gun when I was eight years old; I had a single shot Remington 22 rifle . . . He bought my first 243 before I was 21 . . . We were not shooting children . . . and going into schools with our rifles to start shooting people.

"You can have gun laws all you want, but society has imploded. We don't have the same society today as we had way back then. We cared about each other back in the 40s, back in the 50s, back in the 60s – but since then we've just absolutely caved in. We don't care about each other anymore."

Reagan is the author of "Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan," written with Jim Denney and published by Humanix.
