Lawyers for a Florida doctor charged with corruption alongside New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez will push for his release from jail.
Dr. Salomon Melgen is due in federal court Thursday in West Palm Beach after spending a second night behind bars.
The 60-year-old eye surgeon was charged in a 76-count Medicare fraud case Tuesday, two weeks after another federal case charged him with corruption linked to Menendez.
Prosecutors have called Melgen a flight risk and are expected to fight his release. Defense attorneys said Wednesday that they would continue negotiating a bond with the government.
In the latest case, Melgen is accused of trying to bilk Medicare out of as much as $190 million.
