Facebook's Zuckerberg Buys 700 Acres for Hawaii Sanctuary

By    |   Wednesday, 15 October 2014 07:50 AM EDT

Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has bought two adjacent properties totaling some 700 acres on the north shore of Kauai, one of the main Hawaiian Islands, Forbes reported.

The combined properties— valued at more than $100 million— would carve out a private sanctuary where the 30-year-old billionaire could build a home for his family, according to Forbes.

Zuckerberg first acquired a 393-acre territory at Pila'a Beach, described as having a stunning, though isolated, white-sand coastline. The area was comprised of about two dozen small plots that belonged to local families and were used mostly for weekend getaways.

He next purchased the neighboring Kahu'aina sugarcane plantation, a 357-acre oceanfront property and working organic farm, reportedly owned by investor Larry Bowman. Part of the acreage had been rezoned to allow for the building of some 80 homes, according to Forbes.

Zuckerberg's nearest neighbor will be Denver oilman Gary Stewart, who was not interested in selling his property, Forbes reported.

A Facebook statement, according to Forbes, said the company doesn't "comment on rumors and speculation, but thank you for reaching out!"

The beachfront must remain open to the public under Hawaii law, The Telegraph reported.

Zuckerberg moved from a rental apartment where he lived in 2010 not far from his company's headquarters, to a comparatively modest $7 million house in Palo Alto, California, that he bought in 2011. He has since purchased adjacent properties to protect his privacy, according to The Telegraph.

Forbes estimated Zuckerberg's net worth at $32.2 billion.
