Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby, who charged six police officers in the in-custody death of Freddie Gray, is coming under fire for her on-stage appearance at a concert in honor of Gray.
Mosby was invited on stage by Grammy-winning rocker
Prince at Sunday's "Rally 4 Peace" concert, the
Baltimore Sun reports.
A spokeswoman for Mosby, described by the Sun as "an avid Prince fan, told the newspaper the tickets were a Mother's Day gift from her husband, City Councilman Nick Mosby.
But critics quickly jumped on the news: A more surprising reaction came from a former assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, Laura Coates, who had once been one of Mosby's strongest defenders,
CNN reports.
Coates tweeted her displeasure with Mosby's concert appearance, scolding, "Tsk tsk," CNN reports, and reminding readers that Mosby is already
accused of conflicts of interest.
Mosby, Coates warns, should think before she acts.
CNN notes that immediately after Mosby's filing of charges against the six officers,
Coates stood by her, writing on her blog that Mosby was blameless.
"People have criticized Mosby for taking swift action, calling her charging decisions a calculated form of crowd control or a rush to the spotlight," Coates wrote last week, CNN reports.
"I don't think either is true. Bringing charges is not the same thing as convicting a defendant. Prosecutors and defendants have a shared interest in letting the jury system determine guilt or innocence."
