A series of treatments "aggressively" being studied amid the global coronavirus pandemic include synthetic antibodies, stem cells, and a steroid spray, and Dr. Marc Siegel speculates a press conference announced for Sunday by the White House might be on the topic of an upcoming development for American healthcare.
"I don't know for sure that's what the president is going to discuss, but it's on the table," Siegel told Fox News' "Fox & Friends."
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's hesitance to approve emergency-use authorizations amid the pandemic, particularly on the antibody testing is "eyebrow-raising," according to Siegel, and perhaps President Trump's concern the FDA is becoming "too political" might be justified.
"The FDA delayed an emergency use authorization on convalescent plasma," Siegel said. "Now, that's the plasma or the antibodies you get when you're getting over COVID-19.
"And the fact is that those types of antibodies have been used for over 100 years successfully for other diseases. And a study out of Houston Methodist in 300 patients, published in The Journal of Pathology, just showed a dramatic impact at keeping people alive longer."
