Sen. Marco Rubio says President Barack Obama's apology to an art history professor for criticizing the value of her discipline was "pathetic."
Obama suggested to workers at a General Electric plant in Wisconsin last month that vocational skills were of more use than a degree in art history. After Ann Collins Johns, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, wrote to him to defend the importance of art history, the president sent her a
handwritten apology.
"I was trying to encourage young people who may not be predisposed to a four-year college experience to be open to technical training that can lead them to an honorable career," the president explained.
Rubio's comments have been retweeted dozens of times, though a number of followers criticized the senator. One suggested it was a "cheap shot," while another said he is "desperate for attention."
