Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., says suspected mass murderer Nikolas Cruz should be executed for killing 17 people at a South Florida high school last week, CBS Miami reports.
Appearing on CBS Miami, Rubio was asked if Cruz deserves to be put to death.
"The answer is yes," Rubio said. "In this particular case, it'd be hard to argue against the death penalty."
But he said he has some issues with the death penalty, generally speaking.
"I have concerns in the broader sense about how not everyone gets equal representation in death panels," he said.
Cruz has admitted gunning down students and teachers in a wild shooting spree at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
His lawyer said Cruz would be willing to plead guilty if prosecutors agree not to seek the death penalty, USA Today reported.
Prosecutors have not decided whether to ask for Cruz to be executed, but Broward County State Attorney Mike Satz issued a statement last week saying: "This certainly is the type of case the death penalty was designed for. This was a highly calculated and premeditated murder of 17 people and the attempted murder of everyone in that school."
He said his office would announce its decision "at the appropriate time."
