Rubio, Warren Team on Bill to Stop Fraud Against Veterans

By    |   Monday, 02 December 2013 03:12 PM EST

Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio has teamed with Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren on a bill that would protect elderly, low-income veterans from falling victim to fraud schemes intended to steal their federal benefits.

The bill would require the Department of Veterans Affairs to work with other agencies to crack down on companies that force veterans to sign up for financial services in exchange for help obtaining funds for assisted living or in-home personal care costs, the Boston Globe reports.

In some cases, the veterans' assets are put into irrevocable trusts without their knowledge about the risks.

"It is necessary to stop older veterans from being the target of scams and predatory practices," Rubio said. "These heroes deserve better, and we will always appreciate their brave service and sacrifice."

The scams sometimes end up disqualifying veterans for other government assistance programs, such as Medicaid, the Globe reports.

"Unfortunately, scams are turning the program into something that can actually undermine the financial security of our older veterans and waste federal funds," Warren said. "This bipartisan proposal will help put an end to these financial scams and ensure that we honor our veterans' commitment, sacrifice, and service to the nation."

The measure, called the Veterans Care Financial Protection Act, has been introduced as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act.
