There will be no Easter egg hunts at Los Angeles County public parks this year.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced all public parks in the county will be closed Easter Sunday to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the LA Times reports.
Los Angeles County already shut down city and county beaches and trails. The closures will now extend to include hundreds of parks scattered across acres of land in Southern California for the Sunday holiday.
The parks have remained open during the coronavirus outbreak, but for walking and jogging only.
Easter Sunday typically draws crowds of locals to parks for holiday celebrations.
“I know your heart breaks ... This is such a great tradition for the many families we have,” Garcetti said. “But we can’t afford to have one cluster of even just a few people together spread this disease to more people and kill them.”
Parks are scheduled to reopen the following morning.
Los Angeles County health officials announced 29 deaths on Wednesday, which is the county's biggest daily jump of coronavirus-related deaths. Total, the county’s death toll stands at 198.
