Daniel Handler, who writes children's books under the pen name Lemony Snicket, announced on Twitter that he and his wife, illustrator Lisa Brown, are donating $1 million to Planned Parenthood.
The author of "A Series of Unfortunate Events" said in the tweet that the couple has been "very fortunate" and wanted to share it with "noble causes."
The tweet was made on Monday, one day before Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards testified before Congress on whether the organization should continue to receive government funding.
The organization has been under fire since a series of undercover videos was released by the pro-life group Center for Medical Progress. The group says the videos show Planned Parenthood officials talking about selling fetal tissue for profit to researchers.
Planned Parenthood says the videos are edited.
It is because of that bad publicity that the couple made their donation public, Brown
told Buzzfeed.
"My husband and I have supported Planned Parenthood for years, for obvious reasons: It’s a great organization that has provided top-quality health care for countless women and families in our lives," he said. "This year, Planned Parenthood has gone through a series of unfortunate events, and it felt right to make our support more public and more dramatic."
