Former diplomat Kurt Volker on Tuesday during testimony in President Donald Trump's impeachment inquiry bristled at the use of the term "three amigos" that has been used to refer to him, Energy Secretary Rick Perry, and EU Amb. Gordon Sondland.
"I've never used that term, and frankly cringe when I hear it because to me 'three amigos' will always refer to Sen. (John) McCain, Sen. (Joe) Lieberman, and Sen. (Lindsey) Graham in reference to their work to support the surge in Iraq," Volker, the former special envoy to Ukraine, said during his opening statement before the House Intelligence Committee.
"Moreover, I was never aware of any designation by President Trump or anyone else putting Amb. Sondland or the three of us as a group in charge of Ukraine policy," he added.
Volker, who was called to testify by Republicans on the committee, also told lawmakers he "did not understand" others believed a probe into Ukrainian firm Burisma was "tantamount to investigating Vice President Joe Biden."
He previously delivered closed-door testimony where he said the Ukrainians "never communicated a belief that there was a quid pro quo."
He later revised those comments.
