Hernandez Declares Victory in Honduras, Sets Transition Team

Sunday's presidential election in Honduras has left conservative Juan Hernandez with an "irreversible lead" over liberal Xiomara Castro, says the country's electoral authority.

Both candidates were quick to declare victory, but the authority said late Monday that Hernandez had the most votes (31 percent to Castro's 29 percent) from the two-thirds of polling stations that had been counted, France 24 reported.

"The outcome is decisive," said David Matamoros, of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal. "The figures that we have reported reflect a trend that is irreversible. The outcome is not going to change."

The dispute between the two candidates caused the country uncertainty again amid a backdrop of crime, violence and gangs. But Hernandez said his victory was "not negotiable with anybody" and quickly set in motion a transition team to succeed President Porfirio Lobo.
