Under President Donald Trump’s leadership, the United States “could very well go the way of Germany in the 1930s,” Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., told Axios in an interview that airs in full this Sunday.

“I used to wonder, how did the people of Germany allow Hitler to exist?” The House majority whip told Axios co-founder Jim VandeHei in an interview for “Axios on HBO,” a clip of which was shared on YouTube. “But with each passing day, I’m beginning to understand how. And that’s why I’m trying to sound the alarm.”

He added that Trump is a racist, and that the U.S. “could very well go the way of Germany in the 1930s," according to Axios.

Clyburn previously said in an interview during MSNBC’s coverage of Super Tuesday that he is “absolutely fearful of this country’s future,” noting that he was “never fearful” while protesting for civil rights during the 1960s.

“I felt that sooner or later, this country would respond to my dreams and my aspirations,” Clyburn said. “I don’t feel that way today. I am absolutely fearful of this country’s future.”
