Actress Jennifer Garner, who is a long-time board member of the Save the Children charity, is bucking the trend of Hollywood liberals by trying to engage with the Trump administration to further her cause, Xpose.ie reports.
Over the weekend, she gave the keynote address before the annual National Governors Association meeting and lobbied on Capitol Hill to support early education for poor rural children.
Garner is a long-time Democrat who campaigned for Hillary Clinton and held a fundraiser for Barack Obama in 2008, but while other progressive actors have shunned the new president or participated in demonstrations against him, she has taken a different tact.
Garner, who is a West Virginia native, told The Washington Post: "I'm looking forward to helping him make good on what [the working poor] saw as promises, a mandate from him, that he was going to make their lives better."
By doing so she hopes to demonstrate her true commitment to the cause she has been pushing for years, although she acknowledged that some of her friends in Hollywood "want to turn their back to this administration . . . [and] just wouldn't even want to engage."
But Garner insists "if he's willing to help the poor kids who got him elected, then let's do it."
One of her pet project is to urge Congress and state governments to fund reading and literacy programs that include all-day kindergarten.
She also hopes to encourage the administration, which already plans to cut taxes for corporations and the wealthy, to also expand credits and deductions for the education needs of poor working families.
She said she would even be willing to meet with Trump, telling the Post: "Send me a ticket to Mar-a-Lago. I'm ready to go down and have a steak and a good chat. I really think it's great, if he's willing to help the poor kids who got him elected."
