Harken Health Insurance announced that it would withdraw its application to open in South Florida in 2017, according to the Florida Sun-Sentinel.

In May, Harken announced its plan to open in Florida, reports The Miami Herald.

On June 23, Florida regulators notified Harken that provisions of its application did not comply with Florida law, the Sun-Sentinel reports, but said they would keep the filing open if they submitted more information.

Two weeks later Harken withdrew its application.

Jeff Shoemate, chief marketing officer for Harken, told the Florida Sun-Sentinel that the company still aims to open in South Florida, but will instead focus on its current markets in Atlanta and Chicago.

"Harken believes people in South Florida could benefit greatly from our innovative model, and we look forward to offering access to those services as part of future expansion," Shoemate said.

Harken's exit leaves Florida residents with Affordable Care Act exchanges available from seven companies, reports the Sun-Sentinel. UnitedHealth, Harken's parent company, pulled out of Affordable Care Act exchanges in 31 states, including Florida.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that Harken, based in Minnetonka, Wisconsin, offers free primary care at company-owned clinics. Members also get free wellness services such as tai chi.
