President Donald Trump on Thursday thanked Harvard University and other top schools for deciding against applying for federal emergency relief funds, which he had spoken out against.
Harvard announced on Wednesday that it would not apply for federal relief funds. Stanford University, which did apply, later rescinded its application. Princeton University, which was already allocated $2.4 million, has announced that it will not accept the money, and will not apply for any.
Trump thanked the schools in a tweet Thursday morning.
“Thank you to Harvard and all others!” He wrote, in response to a tweet from his former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.
“They shouldn’t be taking it,” Trump said at a White House press conference earlier this week, according to The Boston Globe, referring to federal funds for small businesses. "They have one of the largest endowments anywhere in the country, maybe in the world, I guess. And they’re going to pay back that money.”
Harvard said in a statement on Wednesday that the funds it was allocated should go to other educational institutions that need it more.
“We hope that special consideration will be given to Massachusetts institutions that are struggling to serve their communities and meet the needs of their students through these difficult and challenging times,” the school said in a statement.
