Pennsylvania Treasurer Rob McCord will plead guilty to federal charges stemming from an investigation into fundraising for his failed bid for governor, his lawyer Robert Welsh said in an interview.
McCord, in a filmed statement released through his lawyer, said he “stepped over a line” with two potential contributors to his campaign. McCord, who on Thursday said he would resign, said he will leave his post immediately.
“I essentially said that potential contributors should not risk making an enemy of the state treasurer,” he said. “Clearly that was wrong and I was wrong.”
Welsh said McCord hasn’t been charged, though he expects to be in the “near future.”
The solicitation occurred in May, when McCord was campaigning for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania didn’t immediately respond to a voice-mail message Friday seeking comment.
