Military Photographer Gets Deal in Passport Case

Tuesday, 12 July 2011 11:23 AM EDT

MIAMI (AP) — A military photographer who served in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay has reached a deal with federal prosecutors to settle charges of making a false statement on a U.S. passport application.

Prosecutors had said Elisha Dawkins, a citizen of the Bahamas, took elaborate steps to pose as a U.S. citizen. He had been set for trial Tuesday. Under the plea deal, Dawkins admitted he checked the wrong box on an application in 2006 but did not admit guilt to any crime.

Dawkins served in the Army reserves in Iraq as a photographer until 2007. He switched in 2008 to the Navy reserves and took photos at the Guantanamo terrorist detention center with a secret-level clearance.

Hundreds of Dawkins supporters say prosecutors should never have targeted an honorable military man..
