Ex-New York mayor Rudy Giuliani Thursday threw his support behind Bill Bratton—the former top cop in New York and Los Angeles—for the city's next police commissioner, the
Daily News reported.
"Would he make an excellent police commissioner? Of course he would," Guiliani said during a breakfast of the National Law Enforcement and Firefighters Children's Foundation. "He already has."
“Bill has been active in law enforcement and security without interruption since the time he was police commissioner,” Giuliani added. "It's something he loves. It's something I know that's deep in his soul. It's a passion. He's an exceptional law enforcement leader and I see why he'd be considered."
Bratton, who served as NYPD commissioner from 1994 to 1996, instituted an approach to policing that cracked down on minor crimes, and a crime-tracking system credited with making the city safer. He was police chief in Los Angeles from 2002-2009.
Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio is not expected to retain current commissioner Ray Kelly, in large part because of Kelly’s support of controversial stop-and-frisk police tactics.
On Thursday, Kelly declined to speculate on who'd take over for him.
“I have no thoughts on my successor,” he told The News.
