GOP Senators Key to NY Gay Marriage Meet Privately

Wednesday, 22 June 2011 12:12 PM EDT

ALBANY, N.Y. — Republican senators who are key to whether there will be legalized gay marriage in New York have gone into a closed-door caucus.

The gay marriage bill isn't on the immediate agenda but could be later Wednesday after talks on a tax cap, New York City rent control and public college tuition increases.

Outside the Senate conference, members of several congregations sang hymns including "Amazing Grace" alternating with "God Bless America" in peaceful demonstrations by those for and against same-sex marriage.

The Assembly has already passed Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo's bill.

The Senate's Republican majority could decide as early as Wednesday to vote the bill to the floor.

Although there hasn't been a tally inside the disciplined GOP conference, the measure appears to be one vote away from passage if the bill gets to the Senate floor.
