The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission acknowledged Wednesday that it would ask the public for any information on potential hazards associated with gas stoves — indicating the government might eventually push for gas stove regulations.
In a statement, CPSC Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. said the agency approved a formal request for information, seeking "research on the health hazards of gas stove emissions, including any connection to conditions like childhood asthma," along with "potential solutions to remediate such hazards, including the feasibility, costs, and benefits of those options."
Before taking regulatory action, the federal government typically puts out requests for information, as a means of gauging the potential impacts of the proposed regulations.
However, the requests do not necessarily mean that more regulations will be implemented.
Trumka recently floated the idea of further regulations on gas stoves, or possible bans on the appliances, telling Bloomberg News that "this is a hidden hazard" and that "any option is on the table. Products that can't be made safe can be banned."
