The FBI Friday said it was investigating a letter containing a white powdery substance that was mailed to the headquarters of evangelist Franklin Graham's religious charity Samaritan's Purse.
Hazardous material teams removed the letter from the international charity's office in Boone, N.C.,
the Charlotte Observer reports.
One person was exposed, the newspaper reports. The newspaper did not identify the person.
"The FBI is involved in an active investigation with a number of our state, local, and federal law enforcement partners," the agency said in a statement, according to Fox News Channel's
Greta Van Susteren.
"Every investigative and safety precaution is being taken regarding this matter. Although the vast majority of white-powder letters are determined to be hoaxes, no incident is taken lightly."
Samaritan's Purse describes itself as an evangelical Christian organization that provides aid around the world. Its president is Graham, son of famed evangelical preacher Billy Graham.
One of the charity's medical workers,
Dr. Kent Brantly, contracted the Ebola virus during an epidemic in West Africa last year, and is now writing a book about his experience,
the Christian Post reports.
