Florida’s Fort Lauderdale has been rated the least-safe city in the entire United States by the website WalletHub, which compared statistics in 182 different cities, CBS4 in Miami reports.
WalletHub compared the cities based on three key areas: home and community safety, risk of natural disaster, and financial safety. The cities were measured by 42 metrics on a 100-point scale to give an overall score. These metrics included the average number of coronavirus cases, assaults, traffic fatalities, and storm risk levels, among others.
Fort Lauderdale is ranked last, with a total score of 38.96. The highest-rated city in the country is Columbia, Maryland, which scored 84.52 in total.
“Much of the data being used in the WalletHub survey has little to do with safety. A closer look at the metrics reveals that cities are being judged on extraneous criteria including road conditions, retirement plan participation, credit scores, debt-to-income ratios, and poverty rates,” Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis told CBS4 in a statement.
“Fort Lauderdale’s crime rates are much lower than many of the cities listed in the survey, and we are proud of the work our Police Department is doing keeping our city safe for residents and visitors,” he added.
