Florida AG: Security Lacking for Obamacare Navigators

By    |   Tuesday, 17 September 2013 03:59 PM EDT

Security is lacking for navigators employed to help people learn their options under Obamacare, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi said Tuesday.

"We're warning people to be careful, because they're going to have your personal information," Bondi said on "Fox & Friends."

The federal government is hiring navigators for states opting out of federal exchanges. Bondi said Florida did not agree to the Medicaid expansion and is not participating in the exchanges, thereby requiring a federal exchange for Obamacare participation.

Bondi is part of a chorus of state attorneys general who have expressed concern over the lack of background checks or fingerprinting for navigators. In August, she and 12 others wrote a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius addressing their security concerns, according to The Hill.

"We have navigators coming into our state and (the Dept. of HHS is) not doing background checks. They're not doing fingerprints. Census takers have better background checks than the navigators," Bondi said.

Obamacare is not ready to be implemented, Bondi said, and compared it to trying to "fly a plane while you're still building it."

"They're enacting this process and they're not ready to. That's what concerns us so greatly about privacy issues," she said.
