NFL Players Adjust to Crackdown on Illegal Hits

Sunday, 24 October 2010 11:26 PM EDT

Steelers linebacker James Harrison and some other NFL players are finding themselves adjusting to the league's tougher stance on helmet-to-helmet hits.

Harrison says he thought about the crackdown on illegal plays during Pittsburgh's victory over Miami. He got a $75,000 fine for one of a spate of vicious plays last weekend that brought about repeated reminders that the league would be watching more closely from now on.

This is the first Sunday since the NFL's series of memos and warnings, and it probably is too early to tell how things are — or aren't — going to change over time. There still are players leaving games with head injuries, but the afternoon's games didn't appear to include the sort of plays that concerned the league.
