Chief: We May Never Know Why Mom Drove into River

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — The police chief in the city where a mother killed herself and three of her children says investigators may never determine the woman's mental state when she drove her minivan into New York's Hudson River.

Newburgh Police Chief Michael Ferrara tells The Associated Press that investigators are hoping anyone who witnessed Tuesday night's triple murder-suicide come forward to provide more details.

But, he said they may never know what Lashanda Armstrong was thinking when she left home and drove to the river.

Police say Armstrong piled her four children into the van and drove it off a boat ramp a short distance from her apartment. She and three of the kids — ages 11 months, 2 and 5 — were killed. Her 10-year-old son escaped and survived.
