78 Health Workers Who Treated Ebola Patient Put on No-Fly List

Nearly 80 healthcare workers who treated Ebola patient Thomas Duncan have been sent letters informing them that they have been put on a United States no-fly list, a Dallas TV station reported.

The workers were also told they cannot travel by any means of transport that could put others at risk of catching an infectious disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention letter obtained by WFAA-TV Channel 8.

The letter to one unnamed Dallas-area resident stated that the Department of Homeland Security, at the request of the CDC, “has placed your name on a federal list that will temporarily restrict your ability to travel by commercial aircraft.”

Without saying what contagious virus the CDC is concerned about, the letter continued, “This action has been taken because you are reasonably suspected of having had an exposure to an infectious disease that is contagious.”

“If you develop illness, and fly, you may transmit your infection to other passengers and crew,” said the letter, which was obtained by Channel 8 on Oct. 18 and is signed by Dr. Martin Cetron, CDC’s Director of Global Migration and Quarantine.

Sent from the CDC’s Houston Quarantine Station, the letter added, “You should also not travel by bus, train, boat, or car with other passengers until a public health official informs you that you are no longer infectious.”

The TV station said on its website that a source at CDC had confirmed that 78 healthcare workers who treated Duncan had been sent the letter.

Duncan, who had contracted Ebola in Liberia, died in a Dallas hospital from the disease on Oct. 8.
