Golf's top-ranked player Dustin Johnson has contracted COVID-19 and will miss this week's U.S. PGA Tour event in Las Vegas, the tour announced.
Johnson, 36, said he had begun experiencing symptoms and was administered a test by the tour which returned positive, necessitating his withdrawal from the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek in North Las Vegas, the tour said on its website.
"Obviously, I am very disappointed," said Johnson, the 2016 U.S. Open champion. "I was really looking forward to competing this week, but will do everything I can to return as quickly as possible. I have already had a few calls with the TOUR's medical team and appreciate all the support and guidance they have given me."
Johnson, whose only appearance since the new season began Sept. 10 was a sixth-placed finish at the delayed U.S. Open on Sept. 20, played in 14 events during the COVID-19-interrupted 2019-2020 season, winning three including the season-ending Tour Championship on Sept. 7. He also captured the season's FedEx Cup championship.
More than a dozen tour players have tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 this year since the 2019-2020 interrupted season resumed in June after a 13-week break.
The tour said Johnson is in self-isolation.
