President Donald Trump said Thursday domestic travel restrictions are possible — particularly for areas in the country that get "too hot" amid the coronavirus outbreak.

In a news conference during an Oval Office meeting between Trump and Ireland's prime minister, Leo Varadkar, the president was asked whether his ban on travelers from much of Europe could encompass U.S. destinations as well.

"Are you considering travel restrictions within the United States, such as to Washington state or to California?" a reporter asked.

"We haven't discussed that yet," Trump replied. "Is it a possibility? Yes, if somebody gets a little bit out of control, if an area gets too hot."

Trump announced a 30-day ban on travel from Europe on Wednesday night in a rare Oval Office address. It will go into effect at midnight Friday. European officials condemned the ban, which applies to 26 countries. The United Kingdom is not included.

As of Thursday, the three states with the highest number of cases are  Washington with 373, New York with 216, and California with 179, according to ABC News.
