The federal government should consider restricting travel from domestic hotspots amid a surge in coronavirus cases throughout the United States, said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
"When you constantly have it being brought in, it makes things more difficult," DeSantis said Saturday afternoon during a news conference at the State Emergency Operations Center. "I think the administration needs to look at domestic flights from certain areas that have outbreaks."
Three people have died in Florida from the coronavirus, which started in Wuhan, China, and has infected more than 168,000 people worldwide and killed more than 6,400.
Vice President Mike Pence on Sunday said that federal officials were “considering a broad range of measures” for potential domestic travel restrictions but no decisions have been made. “We’re going to continue to follow the facts,” Pence said.
DeSantis said visitors to Florida from other states are contributing to the spread of the virus.
“We’re seeing cases where people clearly contracted it somewhere else and brought it here,” he said.
Washington State, New York and California have 300-plus cases. In the U.S., there are 3,278 infected with the virus. Fifty-nine people have died.
Countries across Europe have shut schools, scrapped large public events and shuttered bars and restaurants.
