Oregon Gov. Kate Brown on Sunday declared a state of emergency in her state as 14 people have tested positive for the virus.
“I have declared a state of emergency, in consultation with @OHAOregon, to ensure that we are able to swiftly and fully deploy the personnel and resources necessary to address coronavirus in Oregon,” Brown tweeted.
The move will allow Brown to bring additional resources to the state’s response.
“I’ve consulted with Oregon Health Authority and I am declaring a state of emergency to make sure we are able to swiftly deploy the personnel and resources necessary to address coronavirus in Oregon,” Brown announced at a press conference Sunday.
The Oregon Health Authority on Sunday announced seven new cases of the coronavirus, doubling the number of known cases in the state. One hundred Oregonians have tested positive for COVID-19, with another 53 test results pending.
The number of positive confirmed cases in the United States surpassed 500 on Sunday as the national death toll rose to 21.
The declaration by Brown “gives the Oregon Health Authority and the Office of Emergency Management all the resources at the state’s disposal to stem the spread of this disease. We will do everything it takes, within our power and in coordination with federal and local officials, to keep Oregonians safe,” she said.
