The United States is likely to have at least 50,000 coronavirus deaths by May 1, according to Fivethirtyeight.com.
The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington estimates the number of coronavirus deaths around the United States will be about 51,000 by May 1, the publication writes. That number has an uncertainty range of 28,000 to 112,000.
Another survey compiled by the University of Massachusetts-Amherst showed that an expert consensus predicts the United States will have 47,000 coronavirus deaths by May 1, leaving a 90% chance of there being 32,000 and 82,000 deaths.
The article also noted an interesting change in how coronavirus cases are categorized in New York state.
New York now includes people who likely died from coronavirus, not just those where coronavirus was the obvious cause. That added 3,700 more coronavirus deaths to the state, bringing its total to more than 10,000 coronavirus deaths.
As of April 17, the total number of U.S. deaths from coronavirus is more than 32,00, which increased from 16,000 in one week.
