At least a quarter of U.S. states have record-high coronavirus cases over a seven-day period ahead of Independence Day celebrations.
Among the states experiencing surges in coronavirus cases are Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, West Virginia and Wisconsin, according to the Washington Post.
The United States had 56,566 new coronavirus cases on Friday, its highest number of new cases in one day.
The sharpest spikes are occurring in Arizona, California, Florida and Texas.
Some states have reversed course on reopenings and tamped down July 4 events.
For example, Huntington Beach, California will allow its beaches to stay open but will minimize its Fourth of July parade, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Los Angeles and San Francisco have decided to forego fireworks displays, erring on the side of caution due to the potential health risk of spreading coronavirus.
Philadelphia has planned online events like a streaming concert and videos displaying historical re-enactments.
On the other hand, President Donald Trump has decided to hold a $600,000 fireworks extravaganza at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.
