Conn. Mayor Threatened After Praising Sharpton on Climate Change

The mayor of Bridgeport, Conn. has received several threats since appearing with the Rev. Al Sharpton on TV this week.

According to the Hartford Courant,  Mayor Bill Finch was on Sharpton's MSNBC show Monday evening to discuss weather conditions in his city during the blizzard that struck the Northeast.

At the end of the interview, Finch thanked Sharpton for "fighting the good fight on climate change."

"Thank you for your show, reverend," Finch said. "You've been fighting the good fight on climate change and we can see crazy climate here. We'd like to have a little bit more of you down in Washington."

Those comments are reportedly what spurred a series of threats against the mayor and his family.

"Since the interview, Mayor Finch has received many supportive notes from the community," Broesder said in a statement, according to the Courant. "Unfortunately, he has also received very aggressive correspondence from what seemingly are a combination of science deniers and racists from across the country."

The city's police department is investigating the threats, with Chief Joseph Gaudett saying the department is taking them "very seriously," according to the Courant.

Sharpton takes a controversial stance on many issues, including race. He has called out police departments across the country in the wake of several police shootings and incidents that have left black Americans dead.

After two New York City police officers were shot and killed execution-style while sitting in their cruiser last month, Sharpton himself received a death threat.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, who is black, made headlines last week h when he said, "Al Sharpton ought to just shut up and go back into the gutter that he came from."
