ZANESVILLE, Ohio — Dozens of public colleges and universities across the northeast United States are rushing to add new staff, academic majors or job-training courses tied to the natural gas boom.
They hope to prepare students for promised jobs in the industry that's taken off as new technologies tap vast stores of energy in the Marcellus and Utica shale formations.
State governments, the U.S. Department of Labor and private entities such as Retrain America are helping fund the efforts.
Cory May is a graduate of Retrain America's first intensive training course in Ohio. He says he'll make $60,000 to $70,000 at a job he landed at Halliburton.
The training extends from two-week job-training courses to master's and doctoral programs for scientists and engineers.
