Sen. Chuck Schumer, who caught heat recently for saying the IRS should continue targeting tea party groups, now says he also favors the same treatment for liberal groups.
The New York Democrat
made the original comments at a meeting sponsored by the liberal think tank Center for American Progress on January 23.
The IRS came under fire last summer for targeting conservative groups for added scrutiny when they sought 501(c)4 tax-exempt status. Such status limits the amount of political activity groups can be involved in. It was
announced this month no charges would be filed in the targeting.
Schumer says the groups are misusing the status to get away with politicking without paying taxes.
Fox News Channel's
Bill O'Reilly challenged Schumer on Tuesday for not naming liberal groups, such as Center for American progress, which he said is just as guilty as tea party groups.
And Priorities USA spent $57 million defaming Mitt Romney while enjoying tax-free status, O'Reilly said.
"If they did it under the 501(c)4 they ought to be shut down," Schumer said. "I'll say it right here. Right here. Liberal group, pro-Democratic group. Shut 'em down."
