Coming Snow Could Slow Power Restoration Efforts

Wednesday, 25 December 2013 02:39 PM EST

The ice that knocked out power to more than half a million people in the U.S. and Canada is stubbornly hanging on as frigid temperatures blanket a region from the Great Lakes to New England.

Utilities say they're making progress getting the lights back on from Michigan to Maine and people are slowly trickling out of shelters to spend Christmas at home.

But others could lose power as wind knocks down more tree limbs and some regions could get 2 to 6 inches of snow Thursday. That would make it harder for workers to get to downed lines.

Ashley Walter celebrated Christmas at a shelter in Litchfield, Maine, with her husband and their month-old daughter. The 27-year-old would rather be home but says shelter volunteers are making things comfortable.
