Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie hailed the Supreme Court's decision to clear the way for states to legalize sports betting.
Christie made his comments in a Monday tweet.
A New Jersey sports gambling law, pushed by Republican Christie when he was in office, was challenged in court by the National Football League, Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
But Monday, the high court upheld the legality of the 2014 state law permitting sports betting at New Jersey casinos and horse racetracks and voided the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA).
"Congress can regulate sports gambling directly, but if it elects not to do so, each State is free to act on its own," Justice Samuel Alito said in delivering the court's opinion. "Our job is to interpret the law Congress has enacted and decide whether it is consistent with the Constitution. PASPA is not."
