Republicans have 3-1 odds of taking over the Senate, and they need to use that power to push their agenda, conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer told
Fox News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor" on Tuesday.
Even though President Barack Obama's unpopularity has Democrats scrambling to distance themselves from him two weeks before the midterm elections, Republicans aren't farther ahead for one simple reason, he said.
"People don't particularly like Republicans," Krauthammer said. Polls show their favorability in the mid-30s and unfavorability just above 50 percent.
People associate Republicans as "the party of no," Krauthammer said. That's a good thing if the president in power has a bad agenda, he added.
"However, they want to see something positive," he said of voters.
The out-of-power party can't easily put together a national program halfway through a president's second term, Krauthammer said, but if Republicans capture the Senate they can develop an agenda, pass legislation in the House and Senate, and dare the president to veto it.
That, he said, would show they have a vision and prepare them for 2016.
Krauthammer suggested they start with the Keystone Pipeline, oil sales overseas, and corporate and individual tax reform.
