Newly released data shows that 9 percent of the United States population, or about 28.8 million people, was uninsured in the first half of 2017.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that figure was 19.8 million higher in 2010.

Other key numbers in the data from the first six months of 2017:

  • 69.6 percent of adults aged 18 to 64 were covered by private insurance plans, amounting to 137.2 million people. Of that figure, 8.8 million people secured private insurance through either the federal Health Insurance Marketplace or state-based health insurance exchanges.
  • 19.2 percent of adults aged 18-64 had public health insurance plans.
  • 12.5 percent of adults aged 18-64 were uninsured.
  • The number of people under age 65 with a high-deductible health plan shot up from 39.4 percent in 2016 to 42.9 percent.

The Republican Party has tried and failed multiple times this year to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, a move that would have erased the individual mandate to carry health insurance. The latest efforts to repeal that mandate including placing it in tax reform legislation.
