Richmond, California's city council announced a resolution calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, ABC7 New York reports.
The council said it was the first city in the U.S. to make an official announcement about a possible impeachment. The vote for the resolution was unanimous.
"Unfortunately, with this president it's oddly appropriate," said council member Jael Myrick.
Council member Gayle McLaughlin launched the resolution. It calls on the Congress to probe Trump's business interests.
"This is our voice. This is our country. We have a right to speak up," McLaughlin said.
Resident Ellen Faden supported the council's resolution.
"A lot of politicians aren't willing to go on the record to do this because it can go against them. But as grass roots, as Bernie (Sanders) said, we have to start from the grass roots," Faden told ABC7.
One resident at the council meeting voiced his displeasure with the resolution, and was thrown out after swearing at the council.
"Actually you don't have a voice because the GOP controls Congress and you people are stupid enough to think Congress will impeach Trump," Richmond resident Mark Wassberg said, according to the report.
The council said it hopes more cities will follow its lead.
Earlier in February, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi weighed in on the idea of impeachment, saying that there were no grounds for such a move.
"When and if he breaks the law, that is when something like that would come up. But that's not the subject of today," Pelosi said.
