MSNBC Drops From Second to Fourth Place in Cable News

By    |   Tuesday, 29 July 2014 08:46 PM EDT

MSNBC lost its second-place cable news position in July, falling to fourth place overall in the key demographic, behind HLN, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

MSNBC remains ahead of CNN in total viewers, The Huffington Post reported.

Fox News Channel remains firmly in first place.

MSNBC had been running second overall before July when CNN pulled back into second place. MSNBC viewership has fallen by a third from a year ago.

HLN, CNN's sister network, beat MSNBC by 16,000 views this month, The Hollywood Reporter noted.

MSNBC, CNN and HLN all lost viewers in double digits from a year ago. Fox News saw a 2 percent rise in viewership over the same period. Big stories in Israel and Ukraine boosted all the news networks in the second half of the month, but paid off most for CNN.

MSNBC's popular "Morning Joe" was beaten by CNN's "New Day" in the key 25-54 age demographic, according to the report. And Fox News' "The Five" beat all cable programming in the 5 p.m. Eastern time slot for the third month in a row.

MSNBC's "Rachel Maddow Show" and Fox News' "Kelly File" square off at 9 p.m. Eastern, and Maddow's ratings continue to struggle. She us up only slightly from June, when she saw her lowest ratings ever.

Megyn Kelly, on the other hand, saw her second-highest month since her show's move to nighttime.

CNN has mostly stopped airing news programming against Maddow and Kelly. CNN's documentary series "The Sixties" has beaten Maddow in the time slot, the report said.

MSNBC's "All In with Chris Hayes" along with Maddow, fell 20 percent in the key demo. "The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell" fared better for MSNBC with an 8 percent rise.
