Russian-Born Man to Remain Jailed in Pa. Bomb Case

Saturday, 01 March 2014 01:09 PM EST

A federal judge has reversed himself and decided that a Russian-born college student accused of building bombs in his central Pennsylvania apartment will remain jailed until trial.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Kim Gibson in Johnstown, Pa., last month said he was inclined to free 18-year-old Vladislav Miftakhov. The Penn State-Altoona student has been jailed since his arrest.

But federal prosecutors appealed, and Gibson changed his mind in an opinion Friday.

Gibson earlier said it was apparent that Miftakhov set off explosions for kicks and didn't intend to harm anyone. But Gibson changed his mind after learning that Miftakhov was on probation in his hometown of San Carlos, Calif.

The Altoona Mirror reports Miftakhov has a juvenile court record for trespassing, and was still on probation when he was arrested Jan. 24.
