Obama Says ‘No Child Left Behind’ Law Hurting Education

Friday, 23 September 2011 11:30 AM EDT

Sept. 23 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama said the administration will give states waivers from requirements of the No Child Left Behind law if they commit to higher standards to improve their schools.

The law “has had some serious flaws that are hurting our children, instead of helping,” Obama said at the White House this morning. Because Congress hasn’t changed the law, Obama said the Education Department will ease some its requirements.

“Congress haasn’t been able to do it, so I will,” Obama said.
