Bloomberg's Next War: Sweet Tea, Energy Drinks, Juices

By    |   Tuesday, 04 June 2013 11:40 PM EDT

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has amped up his war against obesity and singled out sweet tea, energy drinks and fruit juices as the latest culprits, reports the Washington Times.

On Monday, the city’s health department launched a series of TV and bus ads warning people about drinks that are seemingly healthy but contain a high sugar content.

The ads cost approximately $1.4 million.

In one TV ad, a young boy happily sips on a juice box.

The scene shifts dramatically to what appears to be a patient being operated on with the words “amputation,” “heart attack,” “vision loss” and “kidney failure” appearing on the screen.

The patient then flatlines.

“Fruit-flavored drinks are not a healthy choice,” a voiceover says after the cheerful music resumes, and suggests parents turn away from unhealthy drinks and instead offer family members water, seltzer, skim milk and fresh fruit.

The city is already being sued by soft drink makers and sellers over efforts to restrict the sizes of soda sold in many eateries.
